Blog Post #12
This blog entry is about a tool in Dr. Wangs TLC Tools . The tool that I have chosen to write about is Duolingo, which is a technology that is free, gamified language learning app for students.
What Is Duolingo?
Duolingo is a free, gamified language-learning app that helps students practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in over 40 languages. It turns language practice into bite-sized, interactive lessons with points, streaks, and levels to motivate learners.
Ease of Use
Duolingo is very easy to use. Students can log in, pick a language, and start lessons immediately. Its intuitive interface, simple instructions, and mobile-friendly design make it accessible to learners of all ages, whether at home or in the classroom.
What the website looks like:
Versatility
Duolingo is versatile because it supports multiple learning contexts: self-paced practice, homework reinforcement, blended learning, or in-class mini activities. Students can focus on vocabulary, grammar, listening comprehension, or speaking exercises depending on their goals.
Overall Likelihood of Using It in My Classroom
I would likely use Duolingo in my classroom to reinforce language skills outside of direct instruction. Its gamified approach keeps students engaged while allowing me to track their progress and provide additional support where needed.
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)
From an SFL perspective, Duolingo encourages learners to understand how language functions in context. By combining reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, students see how meaning is constructed in real-life communicative situations.
TPACK
Duolingo connects to TPACK by integrating language content, pedagogical design, and technology. Teachers can incorporate the platform to provide meaningful language practice, using technology not just as a tool but as a way to enhance comprehension, engagement, and assessment.
